770 Kippahs Guide
Where the name comes from
770 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, Brooklyn is the address of the Chabad-Lubavitch world headquarters. The number became shorthand for the building, then for the style of kippah associated with the people who daven there. Ask for a 770 anywhere in the world and people know the shape you mean.
It is worth being clear on what the name does and does not tell you. It describes the cut. It says nothing about the fabric, the price or who is allowed to wear it. Plenty of people who have no connection to Chabad wear a 770 because it is the shape that stays on their head.
770 against the other two cuts
| Cut | Size here | How it sits | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 770 | 165 x 55 mm | Deep, covers more of the crown, sits lower | All-day wear, thick or short hair, no clip |
| Modern | 140 x 40 mm | Shallower, closer to the crown, flatter profile | Office, under a hat, a discreet look |
| Classic | Varies | Traditional shallow round | Occasional wear, formal settings |
The practical difference is grip. A deeper kippah has more contact with the head and more of its own weight sitting inside the curve, so it moves less. If you have found yourself reaching up to straighten a kippah all through a service, the 770 is usually the fix.
The trade-off is visibility. The 770 reads as a larger, more committed piece of headwear. Some people want exactly that. Others want something that disappears, and for them the Modern is the better choice. If you are still unsure, How to Choose a Kippah works through fit in more detail.
The materials, and what each one is actually for
There are 62 770s on this site. The cut is identical across all of them. What changes is the fabric, and the fabric is what decides where you can wear it and how long it lasts.
| Material | From | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Denim | $100 | Thirty versions. The everyday workhorse. Takes wear, washes, and comes in a dozen piping colours. |
| Linen and hemp | $150 | The summer answer. Breathes rather than holding heat. See the Hemp Kippahs Guide. |
| Art | varies | Twenty-three printed and painted versions. |
| Brooklyn | varies | Four pieces built around the 770 building itself. |
| Exotic | $1,500 | Crocodile and python. Each one is different because the skin is. |
A few specific pieces worth naming. The denim 770 at $100 comes in twelve piping combinations and is the one most people buy first. The Hebrew alphabet denim at $200 puts the letters around the band. The hemp 770 at $150 is from the Israel Yehuda Morgenshtern collaboration. The blue Italian leather with yellow lining at $250 is the one to look at if you want colour without pattern. At the top, the crocodile 770 at $1,500 is a single-piece purchase rather than a rotation item.
Sizing and fit
Every 770 here is made in one size, 165 x 55 mm, weighing around 20 g. That covers the large majority of adult heads because the depth does the work rather than the diameter.
Two situations where the standard size is not right. Children need the kids sizes rather than a scaled-down adult piece. And if you have previously had kippot slide off regardless of size, the problem is usually hair type rather than measurement, in which case the deeper 770 cut helps more than a wider one would.
If you need a size outside the standard, that is a custom order. Start at Custom Kippahs.
Buying more than one
Most people who wear a kippah daily own several, for the same reason people own several shirts. A common split is one denim for weekdays, one linen or hemp for summer, and one leather or velvet for Shabbat and chagim.
If the kippah is a gift, the alder 770 casket at $750 is the presentation option, and it can be engraved. For a wedding, Wedding Kippahs covers bulk and matching. For a bar mitzvah, see Bar Mitzvah Kippahs.
Care
Denim and linen pieces tolerate gentle hand washing in cold water and should be dried flat, away from direct sun, so the leather trim does not shrink at a different rate to the fabric. Leather and exotic skins should be wiped only. Nothing here goes in a machine.
