Common questions

What is the difference between a kiddush cup and a becher?

A kiddush cup is the English term for the cup used to recite kiddush over wine on Shabbat and holidays. A becher is the Yiddish word for the same cup. Most observant homes use the words interchangeably. The cup is typically silver, holds about three to four fluid ounces, and ships paired with a small saucer.

What size should a kiddush cup be?

Halacha sets the minimum at a revi’it, roughly 86 to 150 ml depending on the school followed. Our bechers are sized at 100 to 130 ml so the cup is comfortably above the minimum and the wine reaches above the inner rim. Larger cups are available on request.

Is sterling silver the only material?

Our flagship pieces are 925 sterling silver, often gilded inside the cup so the wine sits on a gold surface. Some pieces are silver-gilt with engraving. We do not produce plated cups in this line. Solid silver is the heirloom standard.

What is the synagogue-art series?

A signed limited series of bechers featuring laser-engraved scenes of named synagogues: Brodsky in Odesa, Main Synagogue in Odesa, the artist’s home shul, and others. Each cup is numbered and ships with a printed certificate of authenticity.

Can a kiddush cup be engraved with a name?

Yes. We engrave on the underside of the cup foot and on the wooden box. Wedding date, the recipient’s Hebrew name, dedication verses, and family monograms are all common. Add three to four weeks for personalization.

Why is the saucer included?

On Shabbat the wine is poured into the cup until it overflows slightly into the saucer. The overflow signals abundance. The saucer is therefore part of the kiddush, not just a coaster, which is why every becher in this line ships with a matching saucer.

What does a luxury kiddush cup cost?

Silver bechers in this line start at $950 with the saucer. The Brodsky Synagogue silver-gilt edition is $1,050. Larger commissioned pieces and family heirloom cups run $1,500 to $4,000 depending on weight, engraving, and gilding.

Is a silver kiddush cup a strong wedding gift?

It is the strongest wedding gift in the Jewish tradition after a mezuzah for the new home. The couple uses the cup every Friday for kiddush, and a hand-engraved silver becher with the wedding date carries the giver into every Shabbat the couple keeps for decades.
